Attorney Internet Marketing is Not New
The Internet and Attorney Internet Marketing is no longer new. Social Media is no longer new. The Internet has become such an important part of our life, that many people would be lost without it.
Yet, I still hear some colleagues questioning whether or not they need a website.
Don’t Let Fear of the Unknown Hold You Back
It’s true that the professional rules of many jurisdictions have been slow to provide clear and definitive guidance in the area of lawyer websites. However, many lawyers have had websites for nearly a decade without issue. Yes, there might be some professional exposure for having a website, but there is exposure for just about anything under the sun – and not all of it is reasonable.
In the law, there will always be grey and undefined areas. And this is one of the main reasons we have lawyers — to interpret the rules.
If fear of the unknown is stopping you from having a website, consider this…
Is it really that unknown?
Lawyer websites have existed for well over ten years now. As a result, there is a wealth of knowledge available from which one can draw to learn how to minimize any related risks and exposure. And there are probably lawyers in each jurisdiction that can provide legal advice in this area — if needed.
The Internet is the Place to Be
Back in 1999 a book called “The Cluetrain Manifesto” came out. Today it sits on my bookshelf as a constant reminder of the principles discussed within. In short, the “Cluetrain” suggested that the web was not composed merely of computers, companies, users, and consumers — but of real conversations.
Real conversations that the legal community needs to be a part of.
Sitting on the sidelines is not an option. In order to be part of the community, you need to participate in it. Being on the Internet is not just about getting clients.
It’s about being a visible part of the Internet community.
It’s Not That Expensive to Get Online
At one time, the Internet may have been technically uninviting, and expensive to participate in. But that was a long time ago. It’s not that expensive now. Although prices vary from service to service, I would suggest that one could establish and maintain a modest Internet presence through outsourcing for about the price of a cup of coffee per day.
